The question we get most
"How much is it, and how white will I actually get?"

Half the people who call us ask about price inside three minutes. They should.

The trouble is that nobody can answer the second half of that question over the phone. How white you get depends on where your teeth start and what is causing the colour, and neither of those is visible down a phone line.

So we don't start by selling you anything; we start by measuring.

What the Nanochroma consultation tells you

Four readings, then the plan that follows from them. All of it yours to keep, whether or not you ever book treatment.

01

Why your teeth are the colour they are

Discolouration has causes: thinning enamel letting dentine show through, coffee and tea sitting in surface pores, old restorations, medication, past trauma. Which one you have decides whether whitening will do anything for you at all.

02

How deep the staining sits

Staining on the surface and staining inside the tooth behave completely differently. We assess depth before anyone talks about treatment, because depth is what decides how far you can realistically go.

03

How sensitive your teeth are

We measure it rather than guess. Sensitivity is the reason most people quit whitening halfway, and knowing yours in advance lets us plan around it instead of apologising for it afterwards.

04

The shade that suits your face

Your ideal shade comes from your skin tone and the white of your eyes, not from the brightest tab on the scale. Teeth lighter than your own sclera read as fake; we'll show you where to stop before you start.

05

The whitening plan from where you are to that shade

The four readings decide the plan: how many sessions it takes to move you from your starting position to the shade you chose, how far apart they sit, how sensitivity gets handled along the way, and what the whole thing costs. In writing, on this first visit.

He almost didn't book

"Honestly, I almost didn't go. I've tried whitening strips from Shoppers before and they did nothing, so I figured professional teeth whitening would be the same waste of money."

"I'm glad I listened. Anas walked me through everything before we started what shade I was at, what was realistic to expect, how the process actually works. No pushy upselling, just straight information. That put me at ease because I had no idea what I was getting into."

"If you're in Ottawa and on the fence about teeth whitening, just go. I waited way too long."

Why results differ

Two people, the same sessions, two different results

Your friend's result tells you very little about yours. Most of what decides where you finish is set before anyone touches your teeth, and all of it is measurable on the first visit.

Where you start

Darker teeth have more to give. In our own measurements the biggest moves belong to the people who started darkest, so two people finishing at the same shade can have travelled completely different distances to get there.

How deep the colour sits

Staining held on the surface lifts quickly. Colour coming from inside the tooth takes longer, and sometimes it has a ceiling. Same gel, same chair, but a different number of visits.

Whether whitening is the right answer

Some discolouration doesn't respond to whitening at all and needs a dentist instead. We'd rather establish that at the consultation than three sessions in.

A client who started with a darker shade, before and after
A client who started with a lighter shade, before and after

Two clients on the same protocol. Different starting shades, different distances travelled.

Which is why nobody quotes you anything before we've measured both.

How we measure

A 40-point scale, not a handful of tabs

Most shade guides jump in big steps; real progress can happen without the guide registering it. Ours reads in forty positions, dark to light, and you get your starting number at the consultation before we discuss anything else.

24
11
40 30 20 10 2
Darker Lighter

Most clients start around 24 and finish around 11 — about a third of the way across the whole scale.

Those two positions, up close
Start 24
Finish 11

Nine in ten clients move at least eight positions on our current protocol, and across 332 measured before-and-afters not one person has finished darker than they started. Where you land depends on where you start, and darker starts move furthest. You'll get your own number at the consultation, before you commit to anything.

332 paired measurements all-time. Percentages and the typical journey cover clients with a completed before-and-after measurement under our current protocol; n=33. Measured on UpWhiten's own 40-point shade scale.

About the strips

Why did your whitening strips stop working?

Researchers tracked three groups over six months: one had professional whitening, the other two used strips and kits from the shop.

After six months, the professional group still had the same colour. The two strip groups had lost more than half of what they gained.

So it wasn't you. Strips fade; that's what they do.

Krayem, Banerjee & Milly, BDJ Open 2024;10:41.

Would a stronger gel have worked?

No. A 2026 review looked at twenty-four earlier studies and found the same answer every time: stronger gel doesn't make teeth whiter, it just hurts more.

What changes is time. The American Dental Association points to a study where a shop-bought product took sixteen days to do what one supervised visit did in a day.

You end up in the same place. You just stop planning your evenings around it.

Hajeer & Hasan, Saudi Dent J 2026;38(4):39 · Auschill et al., Oper Dent 2005 (via ADA Oral Health Topics).

So what do we do instead?

No strips, no tray to take home. We put professional whitening on in the chair, and someone watches your teeth the whole time it works.

That's what the study found. The result doesn't come from trying harder; it comes from picking the right approach for your teeth and the staining you actually have.

Sensitivity, honestly

Anyone promising you zero is guessing

Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. The ADA puts transient mild-to-moderate sensitivity at up to two-thirds of users in the early stages of treatment, usually resolving within a few days. We'd rather tell you that than promise it away.

Which is why sensitivity is one of the four things we assess at the consultation, and why we apply comfort agents including nano-hydroxyapatite from the first session rather than handing you something afterwards.

In a controlled trial, clients given nano-hydroxyapatite after whitening reported no sensitivity from day three onward while the untreated group was still symptomatic — and they finished lighter, not darker, than the comparison group.

Comfort doesn't cost you the result.

How the visit goes

1

Book the scan

Pick a time. It takes about thirty minutes.

2

The Nanochroma consultation

We read your shade on the 40-point scale, assess the cause and depth of your discolouration, check sensitivity, and agree on an ideal shade based on your skin tone and the white of your eyes. If the honest answer is "see a dentist first," we'll say that too.

3

Your plan and your price, in writing

What’s realistic for your teeth, how many visits it takes, and exactly what it costs. On this first visit, before you commit to anything. If it isn't for you, you've spent thirty minutes and nothing else.

The questions everyone asks

"How much does it cost?"

It depends on your starting shade and where you want to stop, which is exactly what the consultation works out. You get the number in writing before you start, not after. Payment plans are on the table, and the consultation itself is free either way.

"How many visits will I need?"

That depends on where your teeth start and how deep the colour sits, which is what we measure at the consultation. You get the number before you pay for anything, rather than finding out along the way.

"What about my crowns, veneers or fillings?"

Whitening changes natural teeth. It doesn't change crowns, veneers or white fillings, so if your natural teeth get lighter, that work can end up looking darker beside them. We check for this at the consultation and tell you before you start, not after.

"Will it hurt?"

Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. That's why we assess yours before anything starts and manage comfort during the session rather than after it. We won't pretend it's impossible.

"Will I look fake?"

You tell us where to stop, and we set the target against your skin tone and the white of your eyes rather than the brightest tab available. We record the shade at every visit, so stopping is a decision you make with a number in front of you.

"What if my teeth just don't respond?"

Some teeth respond less, and some need a dentist before they need us. The consultation is where we find that out, and we'll say so rather than sell you a plan.

"How long does it last?"

Clinical research puts professional whitening results at roughly 1 to 3 years before noticeable regression. A 10-year follow-up in the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry (Ritter et al., 2002) found 43% of patients still held their bleached shade after a decade with no touch-ups, and the rest stayed lighter than their original baseline. A 2023 systematic review of 24 trials (Fernández et al., Clinical Oral Investigations) confirmed shade stability for 1 to 2.5 years across both in-office and at-home protocols. What's interesting is that much of the apparent "fading" in the first year is extrinsic surface staining from coffee, tea, and tobacco rather than chemical reversal; a 2015 randomised trial (de Geus et al., Journal of Dentistry) showed that a standard professional polish brought teeth back to their post-bleaching shade at the 1-year mark. A short touch-up every 6 to 12 months strips accumulated surface pigment and re-oxidises deeper chromogens without repeating a full course. That's why the touch-up is included in our protocol.

"Can I just call and get a price?"

We get it. But the honest answer is no, not a useful one. Your price depends on your starting shade and how far you want to go, and we can’t see either of those over the phone. The consultation exists so we can give you a real number, not a range. It takes 30 minutes and costs nothing.

Your next step

Find out why your teeth are that colour. Then decide.

No credit card, no commitment. You leave with your shade, your stain depth, your sensitivity level, and your ideal target. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so.
